Welcome to Day 25 of our 31 on 31 for Halloween. Today, I am taking the time to talk about a mash. A monster mash if you will. It wasn't a graveyard smash when it was released unfortunately. But a few years later, it was nice to revisit. Especially cause it delivers everything in so much style. Join me as I talk about Slice.
Slice is written and directed by Austin Vesely. Stars Chance Bennett, Zazie Beets, Paul Scheer, Will Brill, Hannibal Buress, and Joe Keery.
In a spooky small town, when a slew of pizza delivery boys are slain on the job, two daring survivors set out to catch the culprits behind the cryptic crime spree.
The sypnosis above as well as the trailer make it feel like it’s going to be a 100% Slasher film. That’s what I thought when I saw that initial trailer and going into the film.
One thing that I will say that goes against the film is how it was marketed. It’s not 100% Slasher. It’s more of a supernatural film noir than slasher film. Like Brick meets Monsters. Going into the film with that mindset, it opened things up quite a bit.
The story itself had quite a bit going on with a variety of different threads running throughout the film. There were some storylines that I enjoyed and some that I kinda felt could have been left out. It perhaps would allow the film to breathe a little more as there may be a small sign of too much going on. But that doesn’t make the film not fun.
The film had some great characters. Some of them were really memorable. Chance Bennett does great in the time that he’s in the film as Dax, the werewolf with a bit of heart of gold. If I had one small complaint about Chance Bennett, it would be that there wasn’t enough of him in the film. Rae Gray provides an entrancing performance as Sadie the Reporter. She stole a lot of the scenes that she was in. Joe Keery also does a great job in the scenes that he’s in. Zazie Beets was another that felt a little underused in the film. She does phenomenal work n her scenes. Paul Scheer. Man what do I say about Paul Scheer. He does a great job as the boss/owner of Perfect Pizza.
Honestly, the beauty of this film is that its characters are memorable. Everyone brought their A-game to this film. It feels like it was such a passion project. And everyone had loved the material because it is something that hasn’t necessarily been seen before. It’s a diamond in the rough.
The cinematography in the film is beautiful. The way the camera moves through scenes it’s like a horror comic brought to life. And the music adds to the unique-ness of the film.
Slice may have a few short-comings. But it has it where it counts – memorable characters, heart, and a bit of a unique story. I highly recommend giving Slice a chance if you’re looking for something fresh.
Rating: 3.5/5. It has a lot of style to it.
